Introduction: The $10,000 Surprise

1 min read

The Cloud Horror Story

Every cloud engineer has heard the story — or lived it.

A student signs up for AWS to learn. They spin up a database for a tutorial. They forget to turn it off. One month later, they check their credit card statement and see a charge for $5,000.

This is not a bug. It is the cloud working exactly as designed.

The Cloud is Industrial Equipment

Cloud platforms — AWS, Azure, GCP — are not consumer toys. They are industrial-grade utility providers, closer in nature to a commercial power grid than to a Netflix subscription. They assume you know what you are doing. If you ask for 100 massive servers, they will provision them immediately and charge you for every second they run. They will not ask "Are you sure?"

Think of it like renting a fleet of bulldozers by the hour. The rental company does not care if you use them or leave them idling in a field. The meter runs either way.

Before you write a single line of code or launch a single server, you must set up your financial safety net. This lesson covers how to learn for free — and how to make sure "free" stays free.
