Introduction: The LEGO Bricks of Kubernetes

1 min read

You Can't Build a Castle with Just One Brick

Imagine trying to build a complex LEGO castle. You wouldn't try to mold the entire thing out of one giant piece of plastic. Instead, you'd use thousands of smaller, standardized bricks — some rectangular, some square, some designed for specific jobs like windows or wheels. Each brick has a well-defined shape and purpose, and the power comes from combining them.

Kubernetes works the same way. It doesn't manage your application as one monolithic blob. Instead, it provides a set of fundamental, composable building blocks called primitives (or objects). Each primitive has a specific responsibility, and you compose them to describe the desired state of your system. Kubernetes then continuously works to make reality match that description.

The most critical primitives you need to know are Pods, Services, Deployments, and ConfigMaps/Secrets. Every production Kubernetes workload — from a simple web app to a complex microservices platform — is built from these same building blocks.
