The Controlled Chokepoint
Rather than letting every developer and build server reach out directly to npmjs.org, PyPI, or Docker Hub, enterprises route all artifact traffic through a private artifact repository — a controlled proxy that sits between your organization and the public internet.
The two dominant products are JFrog Artifactory and Sonatype Nexus Repository. Both support multiple package formats (npm, PyPI, Maven, Docker, Helm, Go modules, etc.) from a single server.
What a Private Repository Provides
1. Caching and availability:
When your build server requests requests==2.31.0, Artifactory downloads it from PyPI, caches it locally, and serves it from cache on all subsequent requests. If PyPI goes down (it does), your builds continue unaffected. This solved the "left-pad" class of problem — in 2016, a developer unpublished a tiny npm package called left-pad and broke thousands of builds worldwide. With a caching proxy, the cached version remains available even if the upstream package is deleted.
2. Security scanning at ingress:
You can configure Artifactory to scan every package it proxies through Xray (JFrog's SCA tool) before making it available to developers. A package with a Critical CVE can be blocked at the repository level, preventing any developer from ever installing it.
3. License compliance:
Artifactory can block packages with licenses incompatible with your business (e.g., GPL in a proprietary product). This is enforced automatically at the repository level rather than relying on developer awareness.
4. Dependency confusion prevention:
By configuring virtual repositories with explicit priority ordering — internal packages first, public proxy second — and by setting includePatterns and excludePatterns, you can ensure that @mycompany/* packages are never looked up on the public internet.
5. Immutability:
Once a specific version of a package is stored in your private repository, you can lock it so it cannot be overwritten. This prevents the "silent republish" attack where a maintainer replaces a published version with different content.

Virtual Repository ← single URL for all builds
(npm-virtual)
├── npm-local ← internal packages (@mycompany/*)
└── npm-remote ← cached proxy of npmjs.org
All build servers point to one URL: https://artifactory.mycompany.com/api/npm/npm-virtual/. Artifactory handles routing internally, applying priority rules and security policies transparently.
